ELAP Leads Effort to Promote Free Civil Legal Aid

As part of its pandemic response, ELAP launched a public awareness campaign for civil legal aid in King County. In collaboration with more than 25 nonprofits that provide civil legal aid services in the region, ELAP spearheaded the effort that produced free community resources including videos, public service announcements, print materials, and a website, covidlegalaid.org. The free materials are available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Mandarin to people residing in King County.

“When a disaster like a pandemic hits, it hurts those who already need our help the most,” says Jerry Kroon, ELAP’s Executive Director. “Many people who have experienced trauma or a crisis have legal options that could improve their situation, but people often don’t know where to turn or can’t afford a lawyer. That’s why this campaign is timely, focused and critically needed during this pandemic.”

The campaign targets people most in need of civil legal aid—those who have recently experienced domestic violence or sexual assault, and people facing eviction, unemployment discrimination and other crises that may have a legal solution.
