What I learned…

We were so lucky to have two amazing legal interns this summer at ELAP. As they wrapped up their time with us, we asked them to share a little about what they learned.

Kayla Erickson is a JD Candidate at the University of Washington School of Law. Here’s what she shared with us:

What is something you learned during your internship that you’ll take with you?
I learned what it means to be a strong, compassionate, and empathetic advocate and attorney. That is something I will take with me throughout my legal career.

What’s been the most rewarding part of your experience with ELAP?
The most rewarding part of the experience was being able to help people in one way or another. Whether it was helping someone get out of a bad housing situation, get their security deposit back, or file for a DVPO, it was very rewarding to be able to help people in my community.

Is there anything surprising that you learned or experienced?
I was surprised at how much of a difference it made to the client when an attorney stepped in to advocate for them. On the housing side, there would be clients who would come to ELAP and were not able to get a response from their property manager or landlord, but once an attorney stepped in and advocated for them in some way, they were able to get their security deposit back, get repairs made, etc.

Kayla is scheduled to graduate with the Class of 2028. Best of luck!
