National Make a Will Month

August is National Make a Will Month.

If you don’t have a legal will, this is a great reminder to get your paperwork in order.

A will is a legally binding document that outlines your wishes after your death on important things like distribution of your assets, care of any minor children, and other final wishes.

Here are some reasons why a will is essential:

  • A will reduces stress for your family after you’re gone
  • If you have children under 18, a will names a guardian to care for them in the event of your death
  • It protects your loved ones and reduces disputes among family members because your wishes are legally set
  • It offers a chance for you to leave a lasting impact on causes or nonprofits you care about by including a charitable bequest in your will

So if this has been lingering on your to-do list, check it off now!

Did you know? ELAP provides free in-person Wills Clinics several times per year for community members who can’t afford an attorney. Our next one is coming up on Thursday, Sept. 26.
